School Holiday Programme Ideas in Auckland: 10 Special Days Kids Will Talk About

Running a holiday programme means planning a week of fun, then doing it all again next week. By the third week of summer, the craft table has seen it all, the park has been done twice, and the kids who come every holiday can tell you exactly what's next.

That's where special days earn their keep. One big day each week gives kids something to look forward to, gives parents something to book around, and gives your team a break from carrying the energy on their own.

If you're looking for fresh school holiday programme ideas in Auckland, here are ten special days that work, whether you run a school-based OSCAR programme, a community centre or a multi-site operation. Some you can run in-house; others bring the activity to you.

What Makes a Great Holiday Programme Special Day?

Before the list, a quick test. The best special days do four things:

  • They work for every age. Most programmes mix 5 to 13 year olds, so the activity has to land with both.
  • They're social. Parents worry about screen time and kids drifting off on their own. Team-based and group activities win.
  • They don't depend on the weather. In Auckland, even summer needs a wet-day plan.
  • They're easy on your team. Your staff already have a big job. The best days are set up for you, or simple enough to run without extra training.

1. A Gaming Day (with a Live Leaderboard)

Gaming is the one activity almost every kid gets excited about, and it doesn't have to mean solo screen time. Set up properly, it's one of the most social days of the holidays.

That's the idea behind Ping Zero Game Day. We bring six Nintendo Switch stations on six 50in screens to your venue. The highlight is a 12-player Mario Kart race across every screen, with Rocket League team games and free-play Smash Bros. between rounds. Kids who aren't racing cheer from the sidelines, which is half the fun.

There are three ways to run it:

  • Free Play ($28 per child + GST): we set up and your team runs it with our quick-start guide, with us on call nearby.
  • Tournament ($33): kids sign in on tablets, results go up on a live leaderboard on the big screen, and the top three take home trophies.
  • Coached Tournament ($40): one of our Game Coaches runs the whole day, finishing with a prize-giving.

It suits 24 to 60 kids, gives each child 90 to 120 minutes of play across the day, and works rain or shine. Delivery, setup and pack-down are included across Auckland. Kids' names only ever appear as a first name and initial.

Why it works: competition and teamwork, zero gear or tech skills needed from your team, and it's indoors when the weather turns.

2. Science or STEM Day

Slime, volcanoes, rockets, robots. A hands-on science day turns "learning" into the best kind of mess. You can run simple experiments in-house with kitchen supplies, or book a science incursion provider who brings the kit and the showmanship.

Why it works: curiosity is contagious, and it gives programmes a learning angle parents love.

3. Sports Coaching Day

Bring in a coach for a day of rugby, touch, basketball, netball or ninja-style obstacle courses. A fresh face with a whistle gets kids moving in a way your regular team often can't.

Why it works: high energy, burns off the sugar, and plenty of local clubs and coaching businesses offer holiday sessions.

4. Art Workshop or Group Mural

Swap the usual craft table for a proper project: a big group mural, clay sculpting, tie-dye or print-making. A finished piece on the wall at the end of the week is something kids point to at pick-up.

Why it works: calm, creative and inclusive, a good balance after a high-energy day.

5. Cooking or Baking Challenge

Run it like a cooking show: teams, a mystery ingredient and judges. Pizza, decorated biscuits and smoothies all work well with basic equipment. Just check allergies first.

Why it works: teamwork, a real-life skill, and they get to eat the results.

6. Movie and Pyjama Day

The easiest special day to run in-house. Kids come in pyjamas, you set up a big screen, beanbags and popcorn, and make a short film-making or trailer challenge the afternoon activity.

Why it works: low cost, low stress, and perfect for the last day of a busy week.

7. Beach, Park or Water Play Day

Summer in Auckland is made for it. A beach trip, a big park day, or sprinklers and water slides on the school field. Just plan the sun safety, ratios and transport early.

Why it works: fresh air, free play, and kids remember it as "the best day".

8. Inflatables Day

Bouncy castles, obstacle courses and inflatable games instantly turn a school hall or field into an event. Most hire companies deliver, set up and supervise.

Why it works: pure fun for the younger ones, with very little setup from your team.

9. Talent Show or Dance-Off

Give kids a few days to rehearse, then put on a show for each other, or invite parents for the final half hour. Dance-offs, magic tricks, comedy acts and bands all count.

Why it works: builds confidence, involves every personality, and makes a great end-of-holidays finale.

10. Theme or Dress-Up Day

Superheroes, space, pirates, the Olympics. A theme ties the whole day together, from the games to the crafts to the lunch. It's also a great way to repackage activities kids already love.

Why it works: cheap to run, easy to plan around, and the photos are gold for your parent newsletter.

Planning Tips for Holiday Programme Operators

Budget per child

Across Auckland, full-day holiday programmes typically charge parents somewhere around $40 to $70 a day, and special days or excursions often add $15 to $30 per child. Pricing a special day per child makes it easy to pass on: parents see a clear "special day" cost, and you know your numbers before you book.

Mix incursions and excursions

Incursions (where the activity comes to you) avoid buses, permission slips and transport ratios. Excursions bring the novelty of a new place. A good summer schedule mixes both.

Always have a wet-day plan

Book at least one indoor special day each week, so a grey Auckland morning doesn't derail the whole programme. A gaming day, science day or movie day can all move indoors at short notice.

Book early for summer

The best providers fill up fast for the summer holidays. Locking in your special days in October or November means you can promote them to parents when they're making their own plans.

Bring Game Day to Your Programme
