Christmas Party Ideas in Auckland: Gaming for Work Dos and Family Parties
13 October 2026 · Ping Zero

Every December, the same Christmas party plays out across Auckland: a function room, a buffet, a playlist nobody chose and a speech everyone half-hears. It's fine. But nobody's still talking about it in February.
If you're hunting for Christmas party ideas in Auckland that people will actually remember, add a bit of competition. Gaming gets people out of their usual groups, gives the quiet ones a chance to shine and creates the kind of "did you see that?" moments that carry the night.
Ping Zero has been running gaming events across Aotearoa since 2002, from Spark Arena and the Sky Tower to backyards in Helensville. Here are our favourite ways to bring that energy to a work Christmas party, a family day or a kids' end-of-year bash.
Why Gaming Works for a Christmas Party
The best Christmas party entertainment does three things: it gets people mixing, it works for every age and personality, and it gives everyone a story to tell. Gaming ticks all three.
- Everyone can have a go. Racing sims, Just Dance and party games are easy to pick up, so you don't need to be a "gamer" to get stuck in.
- It gets people talking. A live leaderboard turns a few laps into a friendly rivalry that runs all night.
- It suits mixed crowds. Staff, partners, kids and grandparents can all play, or just cheer from the sidelines.
- It's turnkey. We bring the gear, set it up, run it and pack it down. Your job is to enjoy the party.
Work Christmas Party Ideas in Auckland
1. Sim racing with a live leaderboard
Our racing simulators are the real deal: direct drive wheels, proper pedals and cockpits, with tracks from Bathurst to Hampton Downs. Add a live leaderboard on a big screen and you've got a "fastest lap of the night" battle that keeps people coming back for one more go.
It's the same format we run for brands like Red Bull and Toyota Gazoo Racing, and it works just as well in an office, a function venue or a hired hall. Put up a prize for the top time and watch the competitive streak come out in your accounts team.

2. Just Dance on an LED dance floor
Nothing breaks the ice like Just Dance. Our light-up LED dance floor and big screen turn it into a full stage, with six people dancing at once and a fresh group every few minutes. It's loud, funny and impossible not to watch. And it's brilliant for getting the people who'd usually hold up the wall involved.
3. A gaming zone for the whole office
Want something more relaxed? We can set up a room full of consoles and screens with party favourites like Mario Kart, Rocket League and EA Sports FC. People drift in and out between drinks and food, and a bracket-style tournament gives the night a natural highlight.
4. Branded experiences for client functions
If your Christmas function doubles as a thank-you to clients, we can brand the whole setup: screens, leaderboard and even the in-game cars. It looks like it was built for your company, because it was.
Planning a work function? Every corporate event is a little different, so we tailor the setup to your space, numbers and budget. Have a look at our event and activation services or send us your date and we'll put together options.
Family and Kids' Christmas Party Ideas
5. The Gaming Van
Our air-conditioned Gaming Van pulls up at your place with eight screens, the latest Xbox games and a Game Coach to run the fun. It's a hit for kids' end-of-year parties, family Christmas get-togethers and work family days, and it fits on most driveways. Parties start from $400 for 90 minutes within 20km of Auckland CBD. See the Gaming Van.
6. Console hire for the holidays
Hosting the cousins over Christmas? Hire a console with controllers and party games, delivered and set up, from $100 a night or $150 for a weekend. Mario Kart with four players on one screen is a guaranteed Boxing Day classic. See our rentals.
7. VR for the big kids
Our Meta Quest 3 headsets are a great way to introduce the family to virtual reality, with games loaded and a quick walkthrough at drop-off. Add a Chromecast so everyone can watch on the TV, which is half the fun.
8. A sim rig at home
For the motorsport fan in the family, a sim racing rig delivered to your lounge makes for a very good Christmas weekend. Race the Mountain, compare lap times, and settle who's really the best driver in the family.
Tips for Planning a Gaming Christmas Party
A bit of planning goes a long way, especially in December. Here's what we've learnt from running hundreds of events:
- Book early. December is our busiest month, and Fridays and Saturdays go first. If you've got a date in mind, lock it in now.
- Think about flow. With a big group, mix a fast-turnover activity (Just Dance or a racing leaderboard) with somewhere to relax and watch.
- Check power and internet. Most setups just need standard power points. Some games and live leaderboards need internet, but we can bring our own if the venue doesn't have it.
- Plan for the weather. Outdoors in December? We can bring a marquee, but an indoor or covered space is always easier.
- Keep food and drinks to one side. We love a good spread, just not on the equipment. A snack table nearby keeps everyone happy.
- Set a prize. Even a small one makes a leaderboard competitive. Bragging rights until next Christmas also count.
Christmas Party FAQs
How far in advance should we book? As early as you can. December weekends and the last Friday before the break are the first to go. Four to six weeks' notice is ideal, but get in touch even if it's short notice, as we can often still make it work.
How many people can play at once? It depends on the setup. The Gaming Van seats eight, Just Dance has six on the floor at a time, and racing sims run one driver per rig with a fast turnaround. For bigger groups we combine activities so nobody's waiting long.
Does it work for adults, or is it just for kids? Both. Our work functions are some of the most competitive crowds we see. The racing leaderboard in particular brings out a side of people their colleagues have never met.
Do you travel outside Auckland? Yes. The Gaming Van and rentals are Auckland-based, and our event setups go nationwide. Tell us where your party is and we'll sort the logistics.
How much does it cost? Gaming Van parties start at $400 and console hire at $100 a night. Work functions are tailored to your numbers and space, so we'll put together a quote once we know what you're planning.
