How We Build High-Energy Gaming Events in Auckland
Most gaming events in Auckland are forgettable. A console in the corner, a few controllers, someone's nephew keeping an eye on it. People rotate through, play for two minutes, wander off.
That's not what Ping Zero does.
Since 2002, we've been delivering gaming events across Auckland and New Zealand — from kids' birthday parties that have the whole street talking, to multi-zone corporate activations at Spark Arena with 8,000 attendees. Here's exactly how we build them, and why the approach matters.
It Starts With the Right Brief
Every high-energy gaming event starts with one question: who's this for, and what do you want them to feel?
A 10-year-old's birthday party at a driveway in Remuera has completely different energy requirements to a brand activation for Shaw and Partners at Commercial Bay. The equipment, the format, the crew briefing, the game selection — all of it changes.
Before we touch a single piece of hardware, we establish:
- Who's attending — age range, group size, gaming experience level
- Where it's happening — driveway, venue, indoor, outdoor, how much power's available
- What success looks like — pure fun, brand engagement, competitive energy, social content moments
This scoping phase is what separates a gaming event that actually delivers from one that's just gear in a room.
Choosing the Right Format
Ping Zero isn't a one-format operation. We configure the right combination of hardware and activation style for each event. The options:
Gaming Van — Birthday Parties and Smaller Events
Our custom-built Gaming Van is Auckland's most talked-about mobile gaming experience. It parks at your driveway, unfolds into a purpose-built gaming studio, and runs for 90 minutes without you lifting a finger.
Inside: eight 32-inch HDR screens in a custom integrated panel wall, the latest Xbox consoles, 20+ game titles, and green LED ambient lighting throughout. Air conditioned. Premium black interior. Up to 8 players simultaneously, Game Coach on-site.
It's a considered product — not a hire-and-hope setup.

Racing Simulators — Competitive Corporate Activations
Our sim racing rigs are the centrepiece of high-stakes corporate activations. Available as single-screen or premium triple-screen setups, running formats from drifting to GT to V8 Supercars to Formula-style time trials.
The difference between our sims and a hire rig: we run a live digital leaderboard that updates in real time as participants complete runs. It creates ambient competitive tension across the entire event — not just at the sim, but everywhere in the room. People watch the standings shift, drift back to beat a rival's time, compete again. Repeat play. Sustained energy.
Just Dance Areas — High-Volume, Inclusive
Just Dance runs 6 players every 3–4 minutes and generates more crowd energy per square metre than almost any other format. It's the activation that gets the people who "don't really play games" straight onto the floor. Outdoors under a marquee tent or inside a venue, it anchors the inclusive end of an event while sim rigs handle the competitive end.
Multi-Zone Activations — Large Events and Festivals
For large-scale activations, we configure multiple zones running simultaneously. Up to 100+ gaming stations, concurrent formats, unified crew managing the full floor. We've done it at Spark Arena for New Zealand's largest gaming festival — and it works the same way it does at a 50-person corporate evening: the briefing is tighter, the logistics more complex, the energy the same.
The Hardware We Run
Every piece of gear in the Ping Zero fleet is production-grade:
- Consoles: PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch
- PCs: High-spec gaming PCs for PC Gaming and sim racing
- Retro: Full retro console library for nostalgia-driven activations
- Displays: High Refresh rate Gaming monitors, ultrawide triple-screen rigs, LED walls, large format screens
- Audio: JBL speaker systems for outdoor and indoor
- LED: Dance floor, ambient lighting, LED walls
- Connectivity: On-site networking for multiplayer and leaderboard operation
We also carry our own RCD safety devices, outdoor extension cables, and networking gear. We don't rely on venue infrastructure for anything critical.

The Crew That Runs It
Hardware is the easy part. The reason Ping Zero events have a different energy is from our team.
Every activation — from a 12-kid birthday party to an 8,000-person festival — is staffed by our trained Game Coaches. Not a casual operator. Not a mate helping out. A facilitator who manages session flow, keeps the competitive energy high, handles rotations so no one's waiting too long, and fixes technical issues without breaking the event atmosphere.
The Game Coach is why clients book again. Anyone can hire a console. Very few can guarantee the room feels alive for the entire event.
Activations We've Delivered
The brief context for the type of work we actually do:
Spark Game Arena Live, Spark Arena Auckland (September 2024) — New Zealand's largest gaming event. Around 8,000 attendees. Ping Zero ran five concurrent zones: the NACON/RIG exhibition stand build, Just Dance for Spark, and PC gaming, Street Fighter on the big screen, and sim racing — all for Red Bull. One crew, one day, one of NZ's most complex gaming event builds.
Shaw and Partners — Pro-Driver Challenge, Commercial Bay (March 2026) — Debut of our integrated leaderboard system combining Blazepod flash-reflex technology with sim racing lap times into one unified competitive ranking. Ultrawide OLED screens on our rigs, tablet self-registration, real-time leaderboard updating live throughout the event.

Chorus NZ — Internet Café of Now, Newmarket (May 2025) — Full technical infrastructure for a 3-day free public event celebrating the Big Fibre Boost at Newmarket. All screens, monitors, retro gaming (PS2 THPS3), esports stage, and legacy hardware engineering to run 25 years of internet-era technology seamlessly.
SkyCity — Minecraft "Pixel Overworld", Sky Tower (April 2025) — Two-week school holiday activation across the Sky Tower. Ping Zero provided hardware, networking, and technical support, and designed and built the themed Minecraft environment — VIP function room to Sky Deck.
Setup to Pack-Down: The Timeline
A typical Ping Zero activation timeline:
Days before: Site visit or venue confirmation — power sources, access points, floor plan, load-in logistics confirmed.
Day of event: Crew arrives 1–3 hours early for corporate activations, 10–15 minutes for van events. Full setup, test run, Game Coaches / Team Members briefed.
During: Game Coach manages floor throughout. Leaderboard (where applicable) runs live. We handle rotations, troubleshooting, energy management.
Pack-down: We're out of your venue quickly and cleanly. No mess left behind.
Post-event: Follow-up from the team. Feedback collected. Review requested if you had a great time.
